ASC Honors Student Summer Experiences!

Check out a few of the exciting programs that ASC Honors students took part in over the summer.

"This summer I participated in the eight-week Dresden Summer Language Program. While there I stayed in a dorm with other students and took a German language class and a class about the history of Dresden, taught by OSU faculty. We also went on weekly excursions to other cities in Saxony, such as Meissen and Goerlitz, and elsewhere in Germany, including Berlin and Weimar. I learned so much, my German language abilities improved greatly, and I had so much fun exploring the city, going new places, and meeting people from all over."

"I lived abroad in Vilnius, Lithuania for five weeks and worked at the National Museum of Lithuania as a participant in the LISS Summer in Lithuania internship program. This program matches American and Canadian students of Lithuanian descent to internships aligned with their major fields in Vilnius, Lithuania’s capital; when not working, participants in the program go on cultural and social excursions around the country. My favorite things we got to do were going on a hot air balloon flight over Vilnius and meeting Lithuania’s First Lady! I made a lot of friends in this program and acquired valuable experience working in a non-American job environment, for which I am very grateful."

"I participated in the Big Ten Academic Alliance Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP) at Northwestern University. I worked with Dr. Erik Nisbet, Professor of Policy Analysis and Communication, in the NU Center for Communication and Public Policy. Throughout the eight-week program, I completed a full research project from start to finish, including literature review, theory development, data analysis, and presentation. My project, "From Bark to Bite: Political Discussion Network Composition and Support for Partisan Violence," examined how Americans' political conversation behaviors and news consumption habits influence their beliefs about partisans on the other side of the aisle, and in turn, their willingness to support partisan political violence. Of the 31 Northwestern program participants, I was one of four selected as a featured presenter for our final research symposium. Additionally, I was able to spend the summer exploring Evanston and Chicago, and I enjoyed swimming in Lake Michigan, visiting the Bean, taking an architecture boat tour, and attending a White Sox game."

"This summer, I studied abroad in Copenhagen through DIS, where I took Positive Psychology and The Good Life, a philosophy course. The program gave me the opportunity to explore new perspectives on well-being, meaning, and human flourishing while immersing myself in Danish culture. I was also able to use funding from the STEP Public Health Cohort to help support this experience, which made it even more meaningful."
